The Slovenian Nutrition Guidelines 2025 (SNG2025) are based on the best available scientific evidence and contemporary knowledge on the relationship between diet, health, and sustainable development. In developing them, the authors drew on international scientific findings — including European, Austrian, German, Danish and Nordic recommendations — and adapted them to the Slovenian context, dietary habits and food availability.
The guidelines are designed to support the population of Slovenia in developing balanced, healthy and long-term sustainable dietary habits. They also serve as a scientific basis for healthcare professionals, educational institutions, public bodies, food service providers, and all others involved in shaping the food environment in Slovenia.
Food is an important part of everyday life. It affects health, wellbeing and quality of life, and is inseparably linked to Slovenian culture, tradition and social environment. Dietary choices have long-term consequences not only for individuals, but also for the healthcare system, rural development, food security and the environment.
Slovenia has a rich culinary heritage and diverse food traditions rooted in its varied geographic, cultural and climatic regions. The tradition of home-cooked food, local produce and seasonal ingredients remains an important part of the Slovenian way of life. At the same time, Slovenia faces shifts in dietary habits, lifestyles and food environments that significantly affect population health.
The guidelines place particular emphasis on the sustainability of food choices. Choosing local, seasonal and quality foods can contribute significantly to preserving natural resources, reducing environmental burdens, and supporting Slovenian agriculture and rural areas.
We believe the guidelines will contribute to a better understanding of the importance of nutrition and support shared efforts towards a healthier, more inclusive and sustainable Slovenia.
We are deeply honoured and grateful for the congratulatory message from Prof. Walter Willett, the world's leading authority in nutrition and public health, on the newly published Slovenian Nutrition Guidelines 2025. Prof. Willett participated as an invited speaker at the international scientific meeting and served as one of the international reviewers. Support was also expressed by PAN International, representing approximately 17,000 health professionals worldwide, which specifically highlighted the interdisciplinary approach, international review and scientific methodology of the guidelines.
"SNG 2025 reflect several years of interdisciplinary scientific work, international expert review and cross-sectoral collaboration."
